Ready to respond

Disaster preparedness component added to My HUB

In a major disaster or emergency, UPMC will tap all resources necessary to provide urgently needed care and services. To respond effectively, UPMC must have comprehensive information regarding the full range of skills and talents of its physicians and staff members.

The skill, licensure, and certification requirements for your current and previous jobs with UPMC have been documented by the health system. However, many staff may have other skills, licenses, and certifications that were used while working for other employers.

“Such skills — even though they are not used in your current job — are valuable because UPMC may be able to use them to meet staffing needs during a major emergency or disaster, such as floods, fires, or a potential pandemic caused by avian flu,” says Loren Roth, MD, MPH, senior vice president, Quality Care, and chief medical officer, UPMC.

To alert UPMC to your talents that have not been used in your current or previous positions with the health system, all staff are strongly urged to complete the Disaster Preparedness Profile on My HUB (the online tool UPMC employees use to review their pay advices, PTO balances, and other information).

“In an emerging crisis, the information you have provided through the Disaster Preparedness Profile will be extremely helpful in identifying staff who have previous certifications or work experiences to meet pressing staffing needs,” says Dr. Roth.

For example, UPMC will be able to use the supplemental information collected though the Disaster Preparedness Profile to identify rapidly those employees with previous experience working as EMTs, providing basic patient care, taking vital signs, and completing dozens of other clinical and nonclinical tasks.

“If we face a disaster, this information can be accessed and will help us deploy staff where they are most needed,” adds Dr. Roth.

Completing your Disaster Preparedness Profile

The Disaster Preparedness Profile on My HUB (accessed online through UPMC Infonet at http://infonet.upmc.com) can be completed in just a few minutes. To get started, log on to My HUB using your protected username and password and select the Disaster Preparedness Profile link under the My Profile section.

Review the checklists in the four categories (licenses and certifications, clinical skills, support skills, and nonclinical skills) and click the appropriate boxes.

Make sure all appropriate boxes are selected and that you click on the Save button at the bottom of the Disaster Preparedness Profile. UPMC will not verify this information until there is a need. You may review and amend this information at any time.
