Spotlight on literacyOn Sept. 14, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings visited the UPMC St. Margaret Lawrenceville Family Health Center to spotlight the importance of early reading. The center is one of five UPMC Family Health Centers that are active participants in Reach Out and Read, a nationwide early childhood literacy program. Through the program, doctors and nurses give books to children at health check-ups and advise parents about the importance of reading aloud to their children. The sites distribute more than 2,500 books to young patients each year.
