Setting a standard for excellence

Enthusiastic. Responsible. Dedicated. Compassionate. Imaginative.

These words are just a few of the ones that nominators used to describe the 171 staff from across the health system who are the recipients of UPMC’s Award for Commitment and Excellence in Service (ACES) for 2006. Nominated by their peers, these staff members reflect the highest standards of excellence that the community has come to expect from UPMC.

Among the ACES winners are:

  • a systems analyst whose quick thinking in performing the Heimlich maneuver saved a co-worker’s life

  • a therapist who created a “day spa” for patients, contacting local businesses for donations

  • an environmental services supervisor who leads by example, frequently joining her staff in working to maintain a clean and pleasing environment

  • a trainer whose innovative problem-solving resulted in finding a way to make 40,000 welcome calls to new members

  • a nurse who helped develop and sustain a patient education center to benefit co-workers

  • In addition to the 167 individual winners, four co-workers at UPMC Presbyterian — a physician, a nurse, a primary nurse care coordinator, and a social worker — won the ACES team award, working together to take exceptional care of a patient in the Neuro Intensive Care Unit and her family.

To find out which of your colleagues has been selected as an ACES winner for 2006, check out your campus issue of Inside Extra! or visit UPMC Infonet. The winners will be honored by UPMC at a special recognition event Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Omni William Penn Hotel.
