July 2, 2009 Expanding a tradition of excellenceMagee broadens services to provide medical-surgical care for women and men
“Magee has broadened its range of services, enabling our physicians and staff to provide outstanding care and treatment for a range of patients, including men,” says Leslie C. Davis, Magee’s president. Magee offers this extended range of services while continuing to serve as a nationally recognized center of excellence for obstetrics and gynecology. “The people of western Pennsylvania have come to know and trust us as a women’s hospital. Now, the high caliber of expertise that earned Magee that distinction extends to the broader scope of patients we serve,” says Ms. Davis. Meeting unique physician needsThe list of family practitioners and primary care physicians referring patients of both genders to Magee continues to grow. “Physicians can refer their patients to us with confidence, knowing that our first priority is always the patient’s well-being,” says Ms. Davis. Ms. Davis explains that additional resources have been allocated to assist physicians in their clinical practice at Magee. Primary nurse care coordinators (PNCCs) have been added to the medicine service to improve communication among patients, physicians, and the nursing staff. The PNCCs round with physicians, set daily patient goals, and address barriers related to timeliness of care and discharge, while keeping the physicians updated on the patients’ progress. Other services include the availability of specialists skilled at starting intravenous lines and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs). Magee also is taking part in innovative services such as acute stroke telemedicine that provides consultation with UPMC stroke experts so that effective therapies and treatments can begin in a timely manner. “These efforts are some of the steps we are taking at Magee to provide all patients across our growing range of services with the right care and treatment on every occasion,” says Ms. Davis.
