UPMC Passavant: Building for the future

Hospital constructs seven-story patient care pavilion

passavant

UPMC Passavant has been a cornerstone of the North Hills for many years, providing high-quality, state-of-the-art health care and service to the people who live in the area and beyond. UPMC Passavant is poised to expand once again with the addition of a seven-story pavilion scheduled to open in 2010.

Construction is moving forward on the project, which will create a 220,000-square-foot space dedicated to patient care. The pavilion, located next to the existing hospital, will provide increased capacity for the UPMC Cancer Center, Emergency Department, and surgical services, and additional beds in the Intensive Care, Progressive Care, and Medical-Surgical units.

Along with providing patients access to expanded services and state-of-the-art technology, the new pavilion will:

  • triple the size of the UPMC Cancer Center, making it the second-largest center for combined medical, surgical, and radiation oncology services in the Pittsburgh region, after the Hillman Cancer Center
  • enable the Emergency Department to treat up to 60,000 patients annually
  • house a new surgical area featuring state-of-the-art operating rooms and an increase in Postanesthesia Care Unit (PACU) space
  • increase efficiency and safety in the new Intensive Care Unit through identically designed rooms
  • increase the total number of telemetry-monitored beds in the Progressive Care Unit to 54 — an increase of 24 beds
  • add 24 beds to the Medical-Surgical units located in the new pavilion
  • incorporate UPMC Passavant’s commitment to providing a patient-focused experience with the creation of a healing garden in the Intensive Care Unit, and the addition of private rooms, concierge services, and other amenities focused on patients, visitors, and their families

As the first LEED-certified hospital addition in the North Hills, the pavilion is leading the way in environmentally sound construction. The building will feature day lighting, nontoxic materials, low-flush toilets and other water conservation methods, and an energy recovery HVAC system.
