Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC was recently recognized as a Top Hospital by The Leapfrog Group, a nationwide patient safety advocacy program. Of the 1,220 hospitals ranked in the group’s 2008 survey of patient safety, Children’s Hospital was one of only seven pediatric hospitals and 26 adult hospitals to achieve the Top Hospital recognition. Leapfrog’s survey criteria included implementing and refining computerized provider order entry (CPOE) medication systems (an area in which Children’s Hospital is recognized as a pioneer); achieving excellent performance standards in high-risk surgical procedures; staffing intensive care units; and demonstrating progress on a wide range of additional safety practices.
