Please print and post for staff who do not have access to
e-mail. UPMC has always demonstrated a strong and unwavering commitment to our nation’s military — ranging from its support of its employees who serve in the military, to partnering with numerous agencies to help rehabilitate returning veterans with military-related injuries, to partnering with the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences in conducting research to benefit the military. Read more> UPMC formalizes existing relationship with Tricare Beginning at 2 p.m. Friday, April 10, and continuing through the weekend, the UPMC Health Plan Member Portal will be offline due to scheduled maintenance. If you are participating in the Weight Race, please be sure to self-report your weight before 2 p.m. Staff should note that the MyActivity Tracker also will be unavailable during this time. Recently, you were invited to share your
ideas on how to reduce costs, manage expenses, and work
more efficiently. More than 800 suggestions have been received, and all of
them are both thoughtful and thought-provoking. More
than half of the suggestions (449) align with work undertaken by the
Cost Savings Initiative (CSI) teams and have been incorporated into
their work plans. Other submissions are new ideas that have not yet
been considered by an existing CSI team. These have been forwarded
to senior leadership in the appropriate business unit, and are being
considered for future CSI teams/initiatives. The
most popular suggestion focused on printing — how to reduce or eliminate
it (156 submissions). This is a significant area of opportunity and
one that requires everyone’s cooperation. The CSI Printing Team is
looking at innovative ways to reduce expenses without sacrificing
quality or efficiency. Thank
you for your ideas. Please continue to look for ways to reduce costs,
and make your suggestions on Infonet,
where you also will find an overview of the CSI team projects. Stay
tuned for news about implementation of your ideas. On Tuesday, April 14, Pittsburgh television stations will join forces to get the word out about the Pittsburgh Promise, the scholarship program that helps students in Pittsburgh Public Schools plan, prepare, and pay for college. UPMC is a major supporter of the Pittsburgh Promise. The program will air from 7:30 to 8 p.m. on local Pittsburgh stations, including KDKA, WPXI, WTAE, and WQED. Thanks to volunteers and visitors from throughout UPMC, the April 4 and 5 tours of the new Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC were “wonderfully organized and enjoyable,” in the words of many visitors. “Amazing” and “absolutely gorgeous” were among the most common reactions to the hospital. Over the two days, approximately 5,000 people visited the campus. Highlights ranged from the technologically sophisticated intensive care units and minimally invasive operating rooms to the Time Wall mural. View media coverage of the tours. An online learning module is available in uLearn for UPMC registered nurses who are interested in learning more about the new Pennsylvania regulations requiring continuing education for licensure renewal. To access this informative and comprehensive online module, visit uLearn via My HUB and search for the title "Continuing Education Overview for Nurses" using the Search the Catalog link. If you have questions about uLearn, contact Corporate Learning and Development. UPMC staff who donate blood three times within the fiscal year (July 1 through June 30) receive one PTO day, or two PTO days for six donations. For information about blood drives at a UPMC location near you, watch your campus edition of Extra Express or Inside Extra. You also can donate at any Central Blood Bank drive or donation center. Be sure to mention you are a UPMC employee. Lace up your walking shoes May 9 and 10.
Team UPMC shirts available: Staff and their family
members who register for the walk may request free Team UPMC T-shirts online
through eProcurement, or by paper purchase requisition. To order, request
item #2000 for short sleeves or item #2400 for long sleeves. The T-shirt(s)
will be delivered to you at your work location. There is a limit of five T-shirts

drive to benefit the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank continues through the month
of April. Staff may donate online through the Virtual Food Drive or bring
nonperishable items to worksite drop-off locations. Staff who donate $7 or
more online will be entered into a drawing to win an iPod. One winner will be
chosen at random at the end of the food drive. Visit the Scouting for Food section of
Infonet for more information. The patient access staff at UPMC’s facilities and physician offices are the front-line employees who give our patients their first impressions of UPMC. During National Health Care Access Personnel Week — April 5 through April 11 — we recognize the work and exceptional customer service that our patient access staff provide every day to every patient and department. National
Health Care Access Personnel Week was established in 1982 to celebrate the
services provided by patient access staff. These vital employees work with
physicians and other departments to provide seamless operations for our
patients. We acknowledge our colleagues in patient access who at one time or
another have helped each and every department at UPMC. On Thursday, April 23, take a
backstage tour of the Benedum Center, participate in a ballet
or Pilates class, meet dancers and artistic staff, and enjoy complimentary

April 23. For more information, call 412-454-9107. On Wednesday, April 29, a night out
