Health care professionals are needed to volunteer as mentors for high school students during Shadow Days in July. Shadow Days are part of the four-week program designed by the University of Pittsburgh Health Career Scholars Academy (formerly the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for Health Care) to introduce high school students to careers in health care.

The students will shadow a mentor on Tuesday, July 14, and Wednesday, July 22. Mentors can choose to participate for one or both days. Professionals in any discipline are encouraged to apply.

To volunteer or for more information, contact Karen Narkevic at 412-647-5362 or narkevickd@upmc.edu.

Why CPOE? The answer is clear. Before adopting computerized provider order entry (CPOE), the turnaround time for medications on inpatient units at UPMC Presbyterian and UPMC Shadyside averaged more than 60 minutes.

Since then, the old system of paper forms and faxes has been discarded. Orders are now sent electronically by the physician directly to the Pharmacy, reducing average turnaround time (placement of order to Pharmacy verification) to 12 minutes at UPMC Shadyside and 36 minutes at UPMC Presbyterian.

Ultimately, this technology allows UPMC to deliver medications in a more timely fashion to our patients.

UPMC’s Environmental Initiative is working to reduce UPMC’s “footprint.” A company’s footprint is a measure of the environmental impact of its water use, carbon emissions, energy efficiency, waste, and other factors.

Various types of footprints are used to characterize impact on the environment. A carbon footprint analysis tracks carbon dioxide emissions associated with energy use and other activities. A water footprint analysis tracks how much water a company uses in its operations.

In order to reduce our footprint, UPMC implements conservation and sustainability throughout our operations. For example, UPMC is reducing our water footprint through water conservation technology that includes low-flow toilets, motion-sensor faucets, and highly efficient water heaters.

For more information, visit the Environmental Initiatives webpage. Collectively, we are making a difference for ourselves and for UPMC’s communities.
