Please print and post for staff who do not have access Monday, May 25, is Memorial Day, a UPMC-observed holiday. If you are working over the holiday weekend, be aware that your hospital or work location may have holiday hours or schedule changes for food services, parking, and other services. Check your campus issue of Inside Extra or look for posted information at your location about holiday schedules. If you take the bus to work in Allegheny County, be sure to check the Port Authority website for any changes in bus schedules over the holiday weekend. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday. With
the advent of vacation season, many Americans are looking forward
to long-awaited vacations.
These trips may be to domestic locations or resorts and other destinations
internationally. If you have planned a vacation to an area such as
Mexico that has seen H1N1 virus (swine flu) activity, check the Centers
for Disease Control website for travel advisories and up-to-date
information about the disease and how to remain safe while traveling.
For example, earlier this week, the CDC removed its recommendation
about nonessential travel to Mexico. For UPMC guidelines about influenza-like
illness symptoms, see the CDC
website and UPMC Infonet’s Flu
Update website. Is your dependent graduating this spring, or no longer a full-time student? If so, you need to notify the UPMC Employee Service Center within 30 days of your dependent’s change in status. You must report the change within 60 days or you’ll forfeit your dependent’s right to COBRA continuation of coverage. To qualify for full-time student status as it applies to UPMC benefits, dependents age 19 or older must maintain 12 or more credits in both the fall and spring semesters. If you have any questions, or for more information, call UPMC DirectLink at 1-800-994-2752, option 3. Learn
more about COBRA continuation coverage. The National Corporate Compliance and Ethics Week quiz was a success. A total of 1,342 entries were received, and all staff who completed the online quiz and answered all questions correctly were entered into a random drawing. Sandy Robinson from UPMC Chartwell and Rosemond Smith from Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC were the grand prize winners. They each won two VIP passes to the Steelers' training camp this summer. Click here for a complete list of winners. Purchase your discounted tickets for UPMC Day at Kennywood Park, scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 23. These Fun Day passes are available for $20. Tickets must be ordered by mail, and may be used any operating day in May, June, or September, or any weekday before Aug. 23. If you want to use the tickets on a weekend in July or August, a surcharge of $10 will apply. The term “environmental sustainability” means that resources are replaced at the same rate at which they are used. Environmentally preferred purchasing is the practice of buying products and services that minimize the overuse of natural resources. As part of UPMC’s Environmental Initiatives, departments are advised to purchase recyclable, durable, and nontoxic products and services whenever possible. Before disposing of obsolete products, departments should consider possible reuse within the health system or by another provider. For instance, Supply Chain Management has established relationships with companies that facilitate the reuse of valuable resources. Unused medical goods, as well as used equipment and furniture, can be donated to Global Links, a nonprofit organization that collects items for distribution to hospitals and clinics in developing countries. Reclamere, a data security company, puts older or obsolete computer equipment to reuse. These
are a few of the ways UPMC practices the “three R’s": reduce,
reuse, recycle. Take a first look at the August
Wilson Center for African American Culture at a free community open house
