Excessive amounts of carbon dioxide, called a “greenhouse gas,” in the earth’s atmosphere have been linked to rising temperatures or “global warming.” The burning of fossil fuels, such as gasoline, produces excessive carbon dioxide and also hundreds of toxic chemicals that impair lung function and worsen respiratory illnesses such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis. Both greenhouse gases and emissions from the burning of fossil fuels raise health concerns. If you live in an urban area, you can help reduce carbon dioxide and emissions levels by driving less, taking public transportation, biking, and walking. UPMC staff members may purchase monthly bus passes on a pretax basis through payroll deduction. To sign up for pretax bus passes, visit My HUB and select My Payroll, then Allegheny County PAT Bus Passes. For more information about commuting options, including carpooling, visit the Commuting site on Infonet. Learn more about Environmental Initiatives at UPMC. Collectively,
we are making a difference for ourselves and for UPMC’s communities.
