Recent studies show that nearly 18 percent of adult-onset asthma cases are due to workplace exposures. As an environmental leader in health care, UPMC is committed to healthy indoor environments in our hospitals and facilities for both patients and staff. Across the health system, UPMC is turning to “green cleaning” techniques and products that avoid toxins and reactive chemicals. Precautions are taken in maintenance and construction, such as in the use of paints with low or no volatile organic compounds. More painting is done during off hours and with increased ventilation.
