Earlier this month, 54 of your co-workers won $500 MyHealth Rewards by taking Healthy Steps. You could be among the next group of $500 winners. To be eligible for the next drawing, simply complete the following steps by July 1:

  • Acknowledge the online Wellness Pledge and complete or update your MyHealth Questionnaire.
  • Complete a biometric screening since Sept. 1, 2004.
  • Take Healthy Steps worth a total of 100 or more points.

Many of you have completed all but the first item above. If you can find 18 spare minutes between now and July 1, you can finish that step and qualify for the drawing.

For more information on Take a Healthy Step 2010 and the MyHealth Rewards drawings, log in to My HUB, click on the Human Resources tab, and select the MyHealth/MyFlex Advantage link.

Ever wonder what all those numbers mean inside the triangular arrows stamped on the bottom of plastic containers? The symbol and numbers represent recycling codes that identify the resin content of the plastic. The numbers assist in sorting various plastic containers for recycling.

For example, resin code number 1 refers to the polymer polyethelene terephthalate, or PET, used most commonly in soft drink bottles. Resin code number 2 identifies high-density polyethelene, or HDPE, used in gallon milk, juice, and water jugs. At UPMC, we recycle plastic material with codes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

When discarding plastic containers and wrapping material at UPMC, check the recycling code number. Common plastic water and soda bottles are usually code number 1. Plastics with resin codes 1 through 5 can be recycled in our blue recycling bins. In this way we can reduce waste and keep tons of plastic out of our landfills.

Visit the Environmental Initiatives site on Infonet to view a brief training presentation on recycling.

If you receive tuition advancement, remember that the state and some local municipalities consider this benefit to be taxable income. Staff who received tuition advancement for the spring 2009 semester will have applicable state and municipal taxes withheld from their pay today, if paid biweekly, or Tuesday, June 30, if paid monthly.

The withholding rate for Pennsylvania state tax is 3.07 percent. The city of Pittsburgh tax rate is 3 percent. Other state and municipal tax rates vary.

For more information about tuition advancement, call the UPMC Employee Service Center at 1-800-994-2752, option 3, or visit the Tuition section of Infonet.
