Please print and post for staff who do not have access UPMC is once again the region’s only medical center named on the annual U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll of America’s Best Hospitals. UPMC is ranked 13th out of the only 21 hospitals nationwide that made the Honor Roll of the “nation’s best” in the 2009 survey. UPMC was ranked in 13 of 16 specialty areas, including seven specialties for which UPMC is in the top 10. Once again, UPMC is the region’s only medical center to be ranked in any specialty. In response to a recent increase
in e-mail "phishing" scams that attempt to trick individuals
into sending their username and password via e-mail, the Information
Services Division and the Information Security Group recommend the
following precautions:
UPMC staff who donate blood by July 31 will be entered in a drawing for a chance to win passes to UPMC VIP Day at Steelers training camp in Latrobe, Pa., on Sunday, Aug. 9.* Already donated? Staff who gave blood since June 1 are automatically entered into the drawing. Central Blood Bank's UPMC blood donation program enables staff who donate three times or more between July 1, 2009, and June 30, 2010, to earn PTO days. Staff who donate three times will receive one PTO day; six donations earn two PTO days. Check your campus edition of Inside Extra or Extra Express for information about blood drives being held at a UPMC location near you. You also can donate at any Central Blood Bank drive or donation center. *One entry per person. Winners will be notified by mail and may bring one guest. Winners are responsible for their own transportation and for securing their own time off. To

Community Benefits Report, Fiscal Year 2008. An updated edition of the UPMC
Style Guide is now available on Infonet. The Style Guide is a manual,
similar to those used by journalists, that explains UPMC’s guidelines
for proper writing and includes a comprehensive listing of UPMC titles
and names and common medical and health care industry terms. This
tool can help any UPMC staff member prepare clear, effective written
communications that are consistent with the UPMC brand and our standards
for professionalism. UPMC is committed to providing nutritional options that support sustainable principles and limit environmental exposure risks to patients, visitors, and staff. Since January 2008, UPMC Food Services has used hormone-free milk in our cafeterias and food preparation. Recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) is a synthetic hormone used to increase the production of milk in dairy cows. Use of this hormone in milk production is coupled with antibiotics to suppress infection. Based on the potential traces of antibiotics occurring in milk and the potential exposure to disease-resistant bacteria, many consumers prefer milk that is hormone-free. UPMC therefore uses hormone-free milk in our cafeterias and food service, most importantly at facilities serving large populations of infants and children, such as Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC and Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. Note: Some foods, such as cheeses that are prepared off-site, may not be hormone-free. Learn
