With CarePages, keeping in touch with concerned friends and family while a loved one is in the hospital is easier than ever. CarePages is a free Web service that enables patients and families to create a private webpage where they can share their latest news with friends and family. It takes just minutes to create and it's so easy that even the most inexperienced computer user can follow along.

If you would like a handout that describes CarePages to patients, a CarePages card is available from UPMC's Print Shop at the cost of 1 cent each (minimum order 50). To order, complete a Printing and Duplicating Service Request Form and specify 10617-82179-1008 in the space for Form Number.

Follow these steps to return used toner cartridges from Xerox devices:

  • Package the old, empty unit in the packaging from the newly installed item.
  • Use the return label found in the box the new toner came in. If a return label is not in the box, print a return label for the package from Xerox's recycling website. You will need to know the device model in order to print the correct label. (If there is a return label in the box from DHL, please disregard. DHL is no longer the carrier for returning supplies.)
  • Ship the device back to Xerox via UPS. At most UPMC facilities, UPS packages will be picked up by UPMC Mail Services. Or, call 1-800-742-5877 or visit www.ups.com to arrange for a pickup. Xerox pays for the pickup charge.

Visit the Printer Resources section of Infonet for more information and a downloadable fact sheet.

In a successful initiative to cut waste in food preparation at UPMC cafeterias, Food Services is recycling used cooking oil. Both vegetable oil used in the preparation of fried foods, such as french fries, and grease byproducts of grilled foods, such as hamburgers, are finding other commercial uses.

UPMC has contracted with a vendor to recover our used vegetable oils for use in the production of biofuels. An alternative to fossil fuels, biofuels are made from biodegradable organic materials, such as vegetable oil, for use in diesel engines. Diesel exhaust contains hundreds of toxic chemicals, carcinogens, and particulate matter that impair lung function. Biofuels can reduce particulate matter emissions by 12 percent, hydrocarbons by 20 percent, nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide by 20 percent, and carbon dioxide by 14 percent.

Cooking grease also is collected and put to use in the manufacture of dog food.
