The upcoming G-20 international summit to be held downtown at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center on Thursday, Sept. 24, and Friday, Sept. 25, will impact some UPMC operations. Although we won’t know the extent of the impact on traffic, transportation, and security operations until a week or two before the event, we need to make contingency plans now to assure that UPMC is open to serve the health care needs of our region.

If you work downtown

If you work in Oakland

If you work in locations outside the city

Plan ahead and stay posted
If you are in a location affected by the summit, do not schedule crucial deliveries to arrive Thursday, Sept. 24, or Friday, Sept. 25. Managers will be requesting staff to update their contact information on My HUB. Specific information about traffic or travel restrictions, parking issues, and security arrangements will not be available until the days preceding the summit.

Staff can sign up for e-mail alerts about traffic and security restrictions on Infonet.

UPMC Health Plan is sponsoring a series of five art contests for children ages 5 through 11. Each contest will focus on a different health or wellness topic.

The first topic, “Healthy Eating,” will feature children’s thoughts on what healthy eating is and how they practice proper nutrition. The deadline to return submissions to designated Wellness Committee members is Sept. 18, so don’t delay.

Winning artwork from each UPMC facility will be used in posters designed by UPMC Health Plan and distributed at UPMC. Each artist of a featured poster, as well as the artist’s parent or guardian, will receive a free day at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium in spring 2010.

Visit MyHealth on Infonet for rules, consent forms, contact information, and art contest template.

Did you know? While UPMC is a tax-exempt organization, we pay taxes on our for-profit businesses and other activities, and make voluntary payments to support municipal government. In 2008, UPMC paid more than $24 million in property, parking, and business taxes and contributions to the state and municipal coffers. The region’s tax revenues also are bolstered by the estimated $96 million in taxes paid by UPMC employees.

To learn more about the many unique and diverse ways in which UPMC serves western Pennsylvania and its people, review the UPMC Community Benefits Report, Fiscal Year 2008.
