Please print and post for staff who do not have access Do you have a Global Crossing telephone conferencing account? If you do, you should also have UPMC Meet-Me Conference Service, our internal telephone conferencing application. UPMC Meet-Me is an alternative ideally suited to small (six or fewer attendees) phone conference meetings held among staff located on a UPMC campus. Since UPMC Meet-Me is a less expensive alternative to Global Crossing, using this service instead of Global Crossing for calls between the UPMC campus sites listed below can make a huge difference to a department’s budget. UPMC Meet-Me is available at the following locations, and wherever Alcatel phone platforms are in place:
To use the service, you must have an account. For information and account
requisition forms, visit Infonet at http://isdhelpdesk.upmc.edu/voice/meetme.htm. What if you could make a difference in the life of a child — or a senior citizen, or a job seeker — by giving up just one latte a week? Even a small donation to United Way — such as the cost of one latte a week — can help provide after-school programs in disadvantaged neighborhoods, a Christmas gift bag to a homebound senior, or job-readiness training for an at-risk teenager. You can direct your contribution to any of the more than 3,000 agencies supported by United Way. Another option is United Way Community Initiatives. Contributing to these powerful new focus programs directed at helping kids in school, preventing youth violence, or helping seniors be healthy and safe at home is a great way to make an impact where it counts — in our schools and neighborhoods. And you probably won’t miss that latte. To make your donation, visit the United Way Infonet site, or visit www.doyouliveunited.org. Two upcoming events at UPMC recognize the needs and responsibilities of those who are caregivers, and their families. Individuals with caregiving responsibilities are invited to “Nurturing the Caregiver and Revitalizing Those Who Care for Loved Ones,” on Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC Auditorium. The program is part of the Women’s Health Series sponsored by the Ladies Hospital Aid Society. It will feature experts on the preparation of legal documents, the role of caregiver support systems, and tips to reduce stress. The program and lunch are free, but advance registration is required. To register, call 412-648-6106 or e-mail LHASOffice@lhas.net. UPMC Health Plan is sponsoring a free lecture at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Herberman Conference Center on the UPMC Shadyside campus. The lecture will be presented by Richard Schulz, director of the University Center for Social and Urban Research at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Schulz is an internationally known expert on caregiving. For more information, contact Jill Bittner, UPMC Health Plan, at 412-454-5666. If you receive tuition advancement, remember that some states (including Pennsylvania) and local municipalities consider this benefit to be taxable income. Employees who received tuition advancement for the 2009 summer semester will have applicable state and municipal taxes withheld from the pay they receive Friday, Oct. 30. The withholding rate for Pennsylvania state tax is 3.07 percent. The city of Pittsburgh tax rate is 3 percent. Other state and municipal tax rates vary. For more information about tuition advancement, call the UPMC Employee Service Center at 1-800-994-2752, option 3, or visit the tuition section of Infonet. The next time you are purchasing a product, think about the impact it will have on the environment. When looking for green alternative products, you can look for green characteristics such as material content, packaging, and disposal methods. But making a selection when faced with all the possible choices can be overwhelming. An alternative is to look for green products that offer green certification labels, or “eco-labels.” Eco-labels are awarded by third-party organizations that review products using standards of characteristics and performance. These reviewers are often government or scientific organizations, laboratories, or industry-based professional groups. Energy Star™ is an example of an eco-label awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. To learn more about eco-labels and environmentally preferred purchasing, visit the Environmental Initiatives site on Infonet or view UPMC’s systemwide policy, HS-MM0300, Guidelines for Purchasing.
