March 2010 The new Center for Connected Medicine in Pittsburgh
The CCM opened Sept. 22, 2009, after two years of development. Participating at the opening were Jeffrey A. Romoff, president and CEO of UPMC, Nicholas Beckwith, chairman of UPMC’s board of directors, and members of UPMC executive leadership. Ann Torregrossa, director of the Governor’s Office of Health Care Reform, presented the state’s perspective on health care reform. Visitors saw the risk of a disconnected health care environment and heard about real-life, patient-centric experiences. To date the CCM has welcomed more than 141 visits —1,263 visitors from 18 different countries, including Australia, Bosnia/Herzegovina, Canada, China, Egypt, France, Guam, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Poland, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Visitors are exposed to structured content, thought leadership focusing on a driving a successful operational strategy, and thought-provoking discussions. Content includes the practice of connected medicine and real-life patient stories where visitors walk between virtual patient settings showing all aspects of the care cycle and the technology that drives each step. “At the CCM we know good business and good health care go together and that there is a risk of a disconnected patient care environment,” says Dr. Andrew Watson, vice president of ICSD and medical director of the CCM. “We understand the risk of a disconnected health care environment, and UPMC is solving this problem with its partners. We believe there are four key elements to a truly connected and patient-centric environment that will drive successful outcomes such as cost, quality and access (see diagram).” For questions or more information, please contact Angela Pantelas (pantelasa@upmc.edu), CCM executive director.
